OTTAWA — With less than a day to go before a new set of punishing U.S. tariffs are set to take effect, Canadian negotiators are trying to hammer out a trade deal with President Donald Trump’s administration as Ottawa faces criticism it may be conceding too much.

Sources with knowledge of what is under discussion say the U.S. would drop existing 25 per cent auto tariffs to 15 per cent with an exemption only for U.S.-made content and parts, and is refusing Canadian calls to treat Canadian auto content the same way. Canadian steel would see U.S. tariffs drop from 50 to 25 per cent for a certain volume of shipments, above which it would continue to be tariffed at 50 per cent. Canadian aluminum would see U.S. tariffs drop from 50 to 25 per cent, according to those sources, whom the Star is not naming because they are not authorized to publicly discuss the talks.
