The all-black design pays homage to the Masked Rider tradition and incorporates Mahomes’ Gladiator emblem prominently. Jones and his wife, Audrey. The stadium was originally dedicated in 1947 as Clifford B. and Audrey Jones Stadium, courtesy of a crucial $100,000 lead contribution from the couple that helped establish the university’s football foundation. Back in the 40s, that was a large financial donation.After Texas Tech entered into an unprecedented 15-year naming rights arrangement with Galaxy to rebrand the facility, the institution wanted to make sure the “The Jones” name was still a vital part of the home game experience. Dr. Jones was a member of Texas Tech’s inaugural board of directors in 1923 and served as the university’s third president (1939-1944). Keeping the traditional name alive among the university’s student population is the naming of the student section after his family. They clearly have top-end talent in the major position groups, and they have the physical tools and the depth to get through a long season. Second, they open the season with a fairly easy non-conference schedule. The non-conference part of the schedule is a stress-free lead-up to conference play. The Raiders have a good chance to start the season 3-0 with early games against FCS and Group of 5 opponents (like Abilene Christian and Sam Houston) and a rebuilding Oregon State program. Third, Texas Tech avoids a number of the worst road-hostile environments in conference play. Galaxy Stadium has critical meetings against rivals and important Big 12 opponents like Houston, Arizona State, Arizona, and TCU. The road games at Baylor, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, and Colorado are manageable in comparison to other possible conference road games. Finally, a 12-0 finish is about a 30% to 35% likelihood, not a lock.
