The High Court ruling follows the comprehensive dismissal in July of all unlawful information gathering claims brought against the publisher. Associated Newspapers Ltd spent £34.5 million defending against allegations that included phone tapping and hiring private investigators. Mr Justice Nicklin ordered the interim payment ahead of a future hearing that will determine the final total legal costs owed by the group. The claimants, whose insurance covers up to £16 million, could be forced to pay millions more as the publisher seeks to recover costs on an indemnity basis.
