Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday that the U.S. budget deficit under President Donald Trump has in all likelihood already crested, calling the odds "very good," even as the national debt crossed $40 trillion for the first time.

"There's nothing magic about the 40-trillion number," Bessent told CNBC in an exclusive interview. "We can grow our way out of that."
