Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that winger Jeremy Doku is set to be sidelined for up to three weeks with a calf injury.Doku, 24, started his side’s 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal last Sunday but was substituted at half-time.Speaking on Friday before City’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Sunday, Maresca confirmed that the Belgian winger is set for a short spell on the sidelines.“At the moment, the only one (that is injured) is Doku. Matheus (Nunes) is back, and the rest are all okay,” Maresca said, in quotes reported by news agency Hayters.“Unfortunately at half-time (of the Community Shield), he (Doku) was complaining about pain in his calf. In any case, the idea was to play for 45 minutes. At the moment it looks like two to three weeks (out), no more than that.”When asked about his decision to replace Doku at half-time at the Principality Stadium, Maresca told reporters: “The plan was to change them after 45 minutes to one hour. It was a decision that was taken before the game.”Maresca’s options to replace Doku on the left wing against Bournemouth include Antoine Semenyo, Jack Grealish and Omar Marmoush, although the latter is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur while Savinho is on the verge of completing a move to the north London club. The Athletic reported on Friday that Spurs have reached an agreement to sign Savinho in a deal that could be worth up to £85million ($115.9m). Tottenham are also advancing in talks to sign Marmoush.Doku enjoyed a successful 2025-26 campaign, recording eight goals and 14 assists in all competitions as City won both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. Last week, the winger signed a new five-year contract with the club.Sunday’s game against Bournemouth will be the first time City face the south coast side since the 1-1 draw between the two teams, a result that ensured Arsenal’s Premier League title win. What does this mean for City?Analysis from football writer Jordan CampbellDoku’s injury leaves City short in the wide areas and removes another piece of stability from the team as it attempts to transition from Pep Guardiola to Enzo Maresca.Entering his fourth season, Doku is now expected to step up and become an integral player so the early disruption to his season is not ideal. Jack Grealish replaced the Belgian winger at half-time, but there is not another like-for-like option.Omar Marmoush can operate on the left, Phil Foden can be pushed out wide, and Antoine Semenyo can switch sides but with Savinho’s on the way out, there is a lack of wingers.Ryan McAidoo, 18, has been kept as part of the squad, but he mainly operates off the right flank.Maresca’s positional system relies on one-v-one ability and pace in the wide areas. If it already felt like an area City had to address, Doku’s injury has sent a reminder that they are no longer blessed with multiple options.
