Mangaluru railway region — which is currently divided across South Western Railway (SWR) Zone and Southern Railway (SR) Zone — will be brought under the Mysuru division of SWR with effect from October 1.Capt Brijesh Chowta, Member of Parliament from Dakshina Kannada, announced this through a post on X.Posting a letter by the Railway Board to the General Managers of SWR Zone and SR Zone, and the CMD of Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL), he said: “This gives me a great sense of contentment, especially because this is a demand we raised as a priority within days of taking oath as your MP in June 2024.“Since then, we have pursued it relentlessly — taking it up repeatedly with our Union Minister for Railways @AshwiniVaishnaw, whose proactive engagement and responsiveness in taking forward this long-pending demand I deeply appreciate. We have also used every available parliamentary and institutional forum to highlight the concern and press for its expeditious resolution.”Highlighting the jurisdictional changes between Mysuru Division of SWR and Palakkad Division of SR, the Railway Board letter said: “The issue of transfer of Mangaluru area (presently under SR) to SWR has been under consideration in Board’s office. In this regard, the competent authority has decided as under.“Mangaluru area upto Ullal (inclusive) to be transferred from Palakkad division of SR to Mysuru division of SWR. The interchange points between SWR and SR will accordingly shift from Padil to Ullal.”It said that Thokur station will remain a part of KRCL as existing and will serve as interchange point between KRCL and SWR.The divisional / zonal boundaries between KRCL and SR will become the divisional / zonal boundaries between KRCL and SWR.The letter said that the exact divisional / zonal boundaries between SR and SWR will be mentioned in the Gazette Notification.The letter said: “The above changes in jurisdiction will come into force with effect from October 1, 2026 as mentioned in Gazette Notification. Necessary preparatory actions for affecting the above jurisdictional changes such as transfer of posts, calling of option, transfer of control boards etc., be taken accordingly and timely.”Terming this decision of the Railway Board as a significant step for Mangaluru, Capt Chowta said it reduces jurisdictional hurdles, improves coordination, enables faster resolution of passenger concerns and gives greater focus to railway infrastructure and connectivity across coastal Karnataka.“With the formal notification expected soon, we will be better placed to address many of our railway-related concerns and, most importantly, enable Mangaluru’s railways to move faster on the tracks of Vikas,” he said.He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Minister of State for Railways V Somanna for bringing Mangaluru under South Western Railway zone.Published on August 21, 2026
