Cases of the tropical diseases of chikungunya and dengue fever have been reported in south-west France, including Dordogne, thought to be spread by tiger mosquitoes.
Diseases like chikungunya, dengue and West Nile fever are usually found in people who have visited tropical regions where the illnesses are endemic - but France is seeing an increasing number of cases among people who have no recent travel history.
It is believed that the illnesses are being spread by tiger mosquitoes, which have been gradually spreading through France in recent years, due to warming temperatures.
The most recent bulletin from Santé Publique France records several cases of transmission autochtone (local transmission) in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region.
In the August 18th bulletin, three cases of locally transmitted chikungunya were reported in the Gironde département, which includes Bordeaux, while one case of dengue fever was reported in Dordogne.
