(Bloomberg) — A plebiscite on making Switzerland’s traditional neutrality stricter is likely to be rejected by the country’s voters, according to a poll ahead of the Sept. 27 ballot measure.Some 54% will probably or definitely vote against the proposal, according to the survey published Friday by public broadcaster SRG SSR. Just 42% support the plan, which would would ban Switzerland from imposing most economic sanctions.A separate poll published earlier this week showed the ‘no’ camp was even further ahead.The nation’s long-entrenched non-alignment is a key part of its identity, and while it’s largely agreed across all political camps that Switzerland should remain neutral, the right-wing Swiss People’s Party wants to enshrine the doctrine in the constitution.The government and parliament are against that, arguing that a more flexible interpretation has served the country better.©2026 Bloomberg L.P.
