Works inspired by video artist Nam June Paik, painter Yoo Young-kuk to light up DDP in fall An installation inspired by video artist Nam June Paik will light up Dongdaemun Design Plaza during Seoul Light DDP 2026 Fall. (Seoul Design Foundation) Seoul Light DDP 2026 Fall will run Sept. 3-13 at Dongdaemun Design Plaza, organizers said Thursday. The event features media art installations inspired by video art pioneer Nam June Paik, abstract painter Yoo Young-kuk and 18th-century Korean verse. The works will turn the venue's 222-meter curved facade into a projection canvas under the theme "K-Original Light.""The Break Point," created in partnership with the Nam June Paik Art Center, builds on Paik's video synthesizer to generate music-driven visuals. The late artist used the device to distort and layer images from TV throughout his career, believing that anyone should be able to play video like an instrument. In a first for the festival, the projections will react in real time to live music. Korean electronic band Idiotape will perform at the opening ceremony Sept. 3. An installation based on the mountain paintings of Yoo Young-kuk will light up Dongdaemun Design Plaza during Seoul Light DDP 2026 Fall. (Seoul Design Foundation) For "In Search of the Mountain Within," media artist Kwon Ha-youn reworks Yoo's blazing color fields into a digital landscape. A separate retrospective of Yoo's work is underway at the Seoul Museum of Art through Oct. 25.A third installation animates verses from "Cheonggu Yeongeon" (1728), the oldest surviving anthology of "sijo," a form of Korean lyric poetry. The work doubles as a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Hangeul Day, a national holiday that honors the invention of the Korean alphabet by King Sejong. The festival drew 1.92 million visitors last year, according to the Seoul Design Foundation, which operates the venue.Viewing hours are 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily. Admission is free.
