Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov is planning a trip to the United States that his team says will focus on attracting resources for new defense technology projects, not political meetings. “The main purpose of the trip, which is potentially being planned, is to attract resources for new projects in the field of defense tech,” Fedorov’s press service told Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. His team said no meetings with US politicians or government officials are currently scheduled. The Kyiv Independent previously reported, citing Ukrainian and US officials familiar with the matter, that Fedorov could travel to the US as early as next week. The possible visit has attracted attention after Fedorov publicly called this week for Ukraine to develop a legal and secure mechanism for holding elections during the prolonged war. The Guardian has suggested that a US visit could be aimed at building support in Washington for that position. Fedorov’s team, however, said the planned trip is focused on defense technology. In a video address released on social media, Fedorov said Russia should not be allowed to determine when Ukrainians can elect their government. “Can Russia effectively be given the right to dictate when Ukrainians can choose their government again? I am convinced that the answer is no,” Fedorov said. President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously said elections should take place after the war ends rather than during a temporary ceasefire.
