The United Nations has urged the Federal and state governments to expedite action on security and access to farmlands, citing that domestic funding for humanitarian interventions in Nigeria is declining, as foreign aid continues to decline.

Mohammed Fall, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, stated this on Wednesday at a media engagement in Maiduguri to mark this year’s World Humanitarian Day with the theme: “Act for humanity”

According to him, the reduction in humanitarian funding from the United States should serve as a wake-up call for Nigeria rather than waiting for foreign assistance.

He, however, called for stronger collaboration between humanitarian actors and government authorities to consolidate peace in the region.

He pointed out that Nigeria has the resources to take the lead in both humanitarian and development sectors, but stakeholders must look inward to fill the gaps where necessary.
