As frustrations mount over stalled contract talks just weeks before school begins, Education Minister Paul Calandra says he is optimistic that collective agreements can be reached with teacher and support staff unions, avoiding strikes.

“The year will start as scheduled and it is my expectation that kids will be in the classroom for a very long time,” he said Thursday in Bradford, where he was visiting a newly constructed school.
