The deputy governor said young people should not necessarily begin their housing journey by seeking large or expensive apartments.
Lagos State Deputy Governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 governorship election, Obafemi Hamzat, has said residents should not spend more than 40 per cent of their income on rent, amid the worsening cost of housing and living expenses in Nigeria.
Hamzat made the remarks while appearing as a guest on Nigerian Info, where he discussed housing affordability, income levels and the broader economic challenges facing Lagos residents.
He argued that young Nigerians should not feel pressured to immediately move into expensive self-contained apartments or larger houses when they begin working, saying cultural practices and shared accommodation could help reduce their housing burden.
“Don't let us misunderstand ourselves as a people. We are cultural people. Do you understand? So, if I start to work as a young person and I'm not married, a lot of us live with our parents,” Hamzat said.
