A modern integrated police control centre has been established at Tiruchendur temple police station to strengthen the public safety, crowd management, traffic regulation, crime prevention and emergency responses.Thoothukudi District Superintendent of Police R. Shiva Prasad inaugurated the centre on Wednesday and reviewed the measures being taken there.Tiruchendur being one of the important spiritual tourism destinations, the number of pilgrims visiting the temple is increasing everyday. While several thousand devotees visit the temple on holidays, the number reaches up to lakhs during major festivals such as sashti, Thai poosam and dasara.Considering the large influx of pilgrims, an integrated police control centre has been established.According to police, as part of the first phase, 110 high-quality surveillance cameras had been installed at key locations in Tiruchendur town, bringing the areas under surveillance. These cameras are equipped with motion detection, night vision and 25-day recording storage facilities. Dedicated communication and cable connectivity has also been provided for the police department to ensure uninterrupted transmission of camera footage to the control room.A total of 12 modern screens have been installed in the integrated control room. Live feeds from the surveillance cameras will be monitored in a combined view on nine screens, while the remaining three screens will be used for maintenance, computer system management and other operational requirements.As part of the second phase, the existing surveillance network will be expanded with an additional 190 cameras, which will increase the surveillance coverage and monitoring capacity of the integrated control room, up to Veerapandiyapattinam on Thoothukudi road and Kumarapuram on Tirunelveli road.In addition, 8 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will be installed at key locations to accurately monitor vehicle registration numbers and five Pan, Tilt and Zoom (PTZ) cameras will be installed for detailed monitoring.M. Mahesh Kumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Tiruchendur told The Hindu that the second phase of installation is scheduled to be completed by the end of September, which is before dasara season. He added that the servers at the control centre have been set up in a way which can accommodate up to 500-700 cameras. He added that a public announcement system has also been established at the control centre to disseminate public announcements and emergency information. He noted that this surveillance system will also be expanded towards Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli road, where the town is expected to witness rapid development over the next two years.
