Copenhagen send its youth to the Arctic after Trump's threats
Denmark has sent conscripts to Greenland for the first time as Copenhagen steps up its Arctic military presence following US President Donald Trump’s claims on the territory.
Copenhagen has increased its military presence in Greenland – a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark – and has now deployed conscripts for the first time to the island’s capital, Nuuk, and Kangerlussuaq air base, the military announced on Tuesday.
“The way the world is right now means that we need to become more accustomed to the Arctic terrain,” said Laura, a captain and company commander leading the conscripts now in Greenland.
Greenland became a focal point of transatlantic tensions after US President Donald Trump laid claims to the territory. Other European countries came to Denmark’s aid earlier this year when Trump refused to rule out military action, before ultimately backing down.
