SAN FRANCISCO — A rising gasp swept through the arena Wednesday night as Valkyries forward Gabby Williams launched a wide-open 3 from the top. It would’ve cut Golden State’s deficit to 6 with just under six minutes remaining and sent Chase Center into a frenzy.But Williams’ shot bounced high off the rim and landed in the hands of Minnesota point guard Olivia Miles, beginning a sequence that illustrated the Valkyries’ latest demise at the hands of the Lynx. With a 9-point lead and the ball, Miles dribbled up the court, hounded by Valkyries forward Janelle Salaun, then shifted gears as she headed toward the paint. Then, suddenly, she whipped the ball around her back and changed direction.Salaun went sprawling, rolling her ankle after stepping on the foot of Lynx center Natasha Howard. While Salaun limped, Miles stepped back behind the 3-point line, taking advantage of the separation like an estranged spouse. She made it under her own power to the bench, where she sat for the final 4:37.Miles, still limping, was well enough to appear in the audience for Minnesota’s postgame press conference. She even got in a question to Kayla McBride.“What made you do the ‘Night Night’ celebration after that last 3,” Miles asked from a seat in the front row of the media seating.“Stephen Curry is my favorite player,” McBride answered.Minnesota takes clear delight in its ownership of Golden State, which continued with a 77-66 win. The Lynx, a WNBA-best 30-7, have championship aspirations but still have time to deliver regular-season smoke to a Valkyries squad that purports to be on their level. And another loss to the Lynx — 0-3 this season, 0-9 all time — left the Valkyries frustrated at this hurdle they can’t clear.Minnesota’s top-end talent continues to trump the depth of the Valkyries, whose success conquering the margins doesn’t seem to work against the Lynx’s magic.
