Lithuania’s Central Electoral Commission on Thursday found that the Nemunas Dawn party and its leader, Remigijus Žemaitaitis, committed serious violations of election law in financing the 2024 parliamentary and presidential campaigns.
The decision was not unanimous.
The commission found that the party’s parliamentary campaign was financed with donations originating from companies and routed through third parties, while Žemaitaitis’ presidential campaign also received prohibited funding through intermediaries.
“The Central Electoral Commission has found that the Nemunas Dawn party and its chairman, Žemaitaitis, seriously violated the Election Code and the Law on Political Organisations,” commission chair Lina Petronienė told reporters.
The commission said 24,200 euros transferred to Nemunas Dawn by its member Robertas Puchovičius originated from two business companies, Tvari Statyba and Lajota. Another 4,500 euros from Tvari Statyba was transferred through Puchovičius to Žemaitaitis' presidential campaign.
