BOSTON — The new infielder doubled twice. The pinch hitter slammed a two-run homer. Every reliever did his job. The Arizona Diamondbacks won a baseball game. If only managing was always like this.“It’s been a challenge, I’m not going to lie,” Torey Lovullo said Wednesday, after perhaps the strangest three-game series of his long baseball life. “It’s my job to keep the ship on course. There’s very turbulent waters every single day. Sometimes there’s hurricanes.”Hurricane Ketel swept through Boston this week, and eventually it could wipe out the Diamondbacks. Wednesday, though, they headed for safety after a 7-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings. The clubhouse speakers rattled the walls at old Fenway with a little more force than usual.“It was a huge win,” starter Brandon Pfaadt said. “We knew that going into this game, whatever we could do to get the job done. I think we all played together today.”Ketel Marte, the Diamondbacks’ three-time All-Star second baseman, was not part of the gang. He flew to Boston with the team but never showed up at Fenway. He did not seek or receive permission to skip the series.The team placed him on the restricted list Monday and sent him back to Arizona for tests on his left knee. But nobody really knows when, or if, Marte will return to the roster. And nobody has clarified the nature of the vague personal issue cited for the no-show.Everyone just seems sort of baffled. Leaving a team with no explanation? It is just not done.“Listen, when it comes to Marte as a player, there’s not too many people that can replace a player like that,” said Nolan Arenado, the veteran third baseman who played through a leg injury to drive in the go-ahead run in the 10th. “He’s one of the best in the game. So, it is a miss. We’re missing a top-tier player.“But at the end of the day, we’re going to continue to fight. Fernie has a great series. He’s here to help us win ballgames. Everyone stepped up, and that’s what we’re focused on.”Ketel Marte, pictured in Sunday’s series finale against the Atlanta Braves, returned to play DH in that game after leaving Friday’s game with knee soreness and missing Saturday’s game. He was activated for Marte instead, started all three games and went 4-for-11. His second double on Wednesday, off Payton Tolle, led to Arizona’s first run.
