WESTFIELD, Ind. — Let’s start with something positive.Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Goodson has had a good training camp and looks to have locked up the No. 3 running back spot. Goodson led Atlanta with seven carries for 28 yards in Friday’s preseason opener and looked good again Wednesday in what was a homecoming of sorts in the first of two joint practices against the Indianapolis Colts.Goodson, who grew up 20 minutes from the Falcons’ practice facility, spent the first three seasons of his career with the Colts before signing with Atlanta this offseason. He was the third running back in the rotation during team work and looked as explosive as anyone on the offense.Given his success in the backfield and his spot as the main kick returner, Goodson appears to have built a lead over Nathan Carter for what likely will be the final running back spot on the 53-man roster. On top of that, Goodson’s clothing brand — RARE — began selling this month.“Guys in the locker room are wearing it too, which is cool,” he said. “Sales have been going great.”In addition to Goodson, the highlights for the Falcons on Wednesday included a long and leaping touchdown catch by Drake London, Zachariah Branch lowering his shoulder and knocking down a Colts defender and an improved run defense. The teams will have one more joint practice Thursday and then play a preseason game on Saturday. Here are six other takeaways from Wednesday’s action:Drake London breaks down film, space vs. leverage, Kevin Stefanski and moreRobert MaysNo movement at quarterbackThe first-team offense still hasn’t clicked. Tua Tagovailoa was 8-of-13 passing in 11-on-11 work against the Colts on Wednesday, and the only ball that traveled farther than 9 yards was a jump ball touchdown to London, who did most of the work, making the catch over a defender and scampering the final 30 yards to the end zone. Tagovailoa was 3-for-3 in seven-on-seven work.“There are some things we can clean up, but I thought it went pretty well,” Tagovailoa said. “Regardless of how close or how far we think we are, the work still needs to be put in at the end of the day.”Tagovailoa threw a pick six in the final team period of the day and faulted himself for bad ball placement. Still, he said he is getting more comfortable in the offense and hopes to continue building rapport with the wide receiving corps.“We’re continuing to grow, figuring out how guys run their routes,” he said. “(I want to get) them to communicate with me and not go to their coach. Like, ‘Hey, let’s talk to each other.’ That’s how we’re going to be able to go out there and feel comfortable.”Rush-ing past Strand?Quarterback Jack Strand’s absence from team work was notable. With Michael Penix Jr. still sidelined for 11-on-11 work, veteran Cooper Rush got all of the second-team work Wednesday while Strand only participated in individual drills.Rush didn’t have much more success than Tagovailoa, but he may have supplanted Strand for the No. 3 spot. If Strand doesn’t get some second-team reps in Thursday’s practice, it’ll be a bad sign for the rookie UDFA.Penix’s only real action of the day came in seven-on-seven work, during which he was 6-for-9 passing.A swing tackle emergesStarting left tackle Jake Matthews played only one series in 11-on-11 work before giving way to Michael Jerrell at that spot. Jerrell and Wanya Morris appear to be competing for the Falcons’ swing tackle spot.Securing the right sideRight tackle is in much better shape with the return of veteran Jawaan Taylor, who had a good day Wednesday while taking all of the first-team snaps. Taylor said after the workout that his absence from the first two weeks of training camp was the result of minor knee surgery he had in March. The seven-year veteran said the triceps injury that cost him five games last year is completely healed since the start of the year.“It was a lot of fun,” he said. “(The Colts) have a great defense, a lot of great players. We just had fun out here competing. Just getting better every day. It’s going really well.”Run defense resurgenceThe Falcons cornerbacks didn’t have a great day, but the run defense showed marked improvement after a bad start against the Denver Broncos in last week’s preseason game. Atlanta had multiple run stuffs against Jonathan Taylor and the Indianapolis starting offense.“Friday night wasn’t up to our standards at all,” defensive tackle Brandon Dorlus said. “We watched the film, we locked in, we came out here and played with a different type of energy.”London’s catchWith Bijan Robinson not able to fully flex his muscle due to the nature of Wednesday’s practices (players were not allowed to be tackled to the ground), London was clearly the best Falcon on the field — even if he only had a handful of catches, a one-hander on the sideline and the leaping grab that he took for the touchdown.“I think it went really, really well,” London said. “Obviously, there is a lot of stuff to clean up, but we’re finding our way right now, and we’re paving it, and I really like where we’re at.”
Falcons-Colts Day 1: Status quo with Tua at QB, but other positions starting to settle
Tagovailoa had a so-so day against the Colts, while Cooper Rush appeared to move ahead of Jack Strand in the battle for the No. 3 QB role.
