The fight against wildfires in Serbia has entered its seventh day, with several areas still affected by active fires and difficult weather conditions.
The most serious situation is in the Deliblato Sands, where a Russian Il-76 firefighting aircraft has joined the efforts to contain the flames. The aircraft arrived at Niš Airport on Thursday night and is expected to carry out firefighting operations in the affected area.
Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić said the aircraft can release up to 42 tons of water in a single flight, making it one of the most powerful firefighting aircraft currently in operation.
The situation in the Stolovi Mountains remains complicated because of strong winds. A fire in the Kladovo area, meanwhile, was localized on Wednesday.
Two fires remain active in the Ibar Gorge, although no buildings are currently under threat. Traffic on the Ibar Highway is continuing normally despite reduced visibility caused by smoke.
