Crystal Palace enter the season with their new manager, Pierre Sage, tasked with an almost impossible job of emulating the success brought by predecessor Oliver Glasner over the last two and a half years.There should not be too much upheaval to endure given Sage’s style of play is not hugely different to that of Glasner, and the players ought to be relatively familiar with what he will ask of them, but there is no doubt the change will bring with it challenges as well as opportunities.Last season’s UEFA Conference League win means they will compete in the Europa League, guaranteeing eight extra fixtures and potentially more if they qualify for the knockout stages. He can play on the left and, in an emergency, as a centre-back.They also brought in Takehiro Tomiyasu as another versatile defensive option on a free transfer. The former Arsenal player, who featured at the World Cup with Japan, can cover on the right and in the middle.Dwight McNeil joined from Everton in a swap deal which saw Brennan Johnson move in the opposite direction and will not only be able to play as a left-sided No 10 but add extra cover at left wing-back and possibly even as a central midfielder. The Aston Villa forward Evann Guessand has returned on loan after he spent the second half of last season at Palace.
