A Chinese businessman who attempted to bribe a Commonwealth official with a bag of tea stuffed with $20,000 will be allowed to return home to his family.
Zhu Guoxin, 40, had insisted a Clean Energy Council manager accept the tea at a meeting in the Brisbane suburb of Camp Hill on July 9, describing it as a cultural gift.
The manager discovered the money when she returned home and immediately reported the bribery attempt.
Zhu – a solar energy businessman – was arrested on July 24 as he attempted to board a flight at Sydney International Airport and was extradited to Queensland the next day.
Zhu admitted to hiding the money in the tea after the Clean Energy Council refused additional payments to “hurry up” approval of Growatt New Energy products.
