Ahead of the 2027 general elections, rising allegations of attacks, intimidation and harassment targeting opposition members and journalists in Ebonyi State are raising fresh concerns about the safety of political actors, media practitioners and the prospects of a peaceful electoral process.

Findings by The PUNCH show that a series of violent incidents recorded in Ezza South Local Government Area between August 1 and 6, 2026, allegedly involving opposition members and journalists, have heightened fears over the shrinking space for political activities in the state.

The incidents, which included the disruption of a planned defection rally, attacks on suspected members and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, and an alleged assault on journalists covering the event, have triggered condemnations from opposition parties and the Nigeria Union of Journalists, with calls for security agencies to investigate the incidents and prosecute those responsible.

While the opposition and affected individuals have alleged political intimidation and complicity by supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress, the APC has denied involvement in the attacks, while the police have also disputed claims that inadequate security was deployed to the affected venue.
