Kotor's fortress hike, Sarajevo's layered history, Istria's rising truffle and wine scene — the destinations worth building a 2026 Balkans itinerary around

The Balkans remain one of Europe's most underrated regions relative to their actual quality, spanning Adriatic coastline, alpine valleys, and centuries of layered history across a set of countries — Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Kosovo — that most travelers still treat as one homogeneous region rather than a set of genuinely distinct destinations.

One useful piece of planning advice from travelers who know the region well: don't try to "do the Balkans" in a single trip. Pick two to four countries, build a route around buses and borders, and leave one night unplanned for whatever place ends up surprising you most.
