Wildfires are raging across Europe forcing people to evacuate as a fresh heatwave grips the continent. A blaze is rapidly spreading across the Hautes Fagnes natural park in eastern Belgium, near the border with Germany. Hundreds more have been evacuated from a beach resort in northern Greece and from a village in southwest France. One person has also been killed in Croatia. Record-breaking heat and droughts have created ideal conditions for wildfires across Europe this summer, especially in France, Spain and Greece. The Balkans region has also endured several heatwaves.The fire in Belgium has already ravaged at least 16 square kilometres (six square miles) of forest since breaking out on Friday, authorities said.Firefighters from across Belgium and Germany have been called in to help tackle the blaze, which ballooned in size overnight and is now one of the largest in the country's history. Two water bomber aircrafts and three helicopters have also been mobilised to tackle the record wildfire under the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism. The office of the governor of Liege province asked residents in parts of two municipalities to evacuate their homes on Saturday afternoon, due to changing winds and smoke in the area. Tourists staying in the area were advised to leave. The nearby village of Sourbrodt, with about 500 residents, is currently also under threat of evacuation.'It is under consideration because of the smoke, but no final decision has been taken yet,' Nicolas Yernaux, a spokesman for the regional authorities in Wallonia, said. Meanwhile, a wildfire engulfed homes on Croatia's prized Dalmatian coast overnight on Thursday, killing one person and injuring a further 40. When I got a little further around the bend and looked, I saw flames shooting up from under my hood.
