Aug. 15 (UPI) -- A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit Indonesia early Saturday has killed 47 people so far, authorities said.
Disaster mitigation agency BNBP said that as of 6:48 p.m. local time Saturday the death toll was 47, including 24 in Manggarai Regency, 17 in East Manggara, three in Sikka, one in West Manggarai, one in Ngada and one in Ende.
About 50 people were injured and about 2,000 have been evacuated.
The quake struck around 5 a.m. local time with an epicenter of 40 miles northwest of the city of Ende, located on the southern coast of Flores Island. Ende is about 1,000 miles east of Jakarta.
