The clash between Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and National Students’ Union of India members at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) campus has escalated into a police case involving 14 students, with three students sustaining serious head injuries in the fracas.Osmania University police booked cases against members of both groups following the clash in the early hours of Friday. Of the 14 persons booked, seven have been arrested and sent to judicial remand, while the remaining seven were granted station bail, police said. The clash took place around 4 a.m. at Basheer Hostel on Friday morning following an initial confrontation between members of the two student groups.According to the NSUI, an earlier confrontation had taken place during a protest outside the MBC Hostel around 10.35 p.m. on August 13. The organisation alleged that Arab and Asian School councillor Rishit Nayak was subjected to caste-based slurs and that EFLU Students’ Union vice-president Sonu Raj was physically assaulted. The NSUI alleged that the situation escalated between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. when a group of ABVP members entered Basheer Hostel carrying sticks and attacked NSUI members. Several students were injured, with three sustaining grave head injuries.The EFLU Students’ Union alleged that students were attacked with sticks, beer bottles and other objects. It also alleged that some students were dragged from bathrooms into the corridors while bleeding and that hostel rooms and other property were vandalised.Female students who reached the hostel after hearing about the incident were also allegedly verbally abused, according to the union. The allegations could not be independently verified.The union also questioned the response of the university administration and police, alleging that the Deputy Proctor, who is also the warden of Basheer Hostel, failed to intervene and allegedly instructed police personnel not to register an FIR when the Students’ Union vice-president and a councillor approached them with a complaint.
