MAUMERE, Indonesia — A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Flores island early Saturday, killing at least 47 people, injuring dozens and destroying buildings as landslides and small tsunamis hit coastal communities.Authorities warned that the death toll was likely to rise as rescue teams struggled to reach remote villages cut off or buried by landslides.The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 5:58 a.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), with its epicenter 68 kilometers (42 miles) north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province.Indonesian authorities initially issued a tsunami warning and urged coastal residents to move to higher ground. The warning was later lifted after monitoring showed no significant sea-level changes posing a broader threat, although small tsunamis were recorded in several areas.A tsunami measuring 1.61 meters (5.3 feet) reached a coastal village in East Manggarai, leaving homes surrounded by mud and debris and fishing boats stranded ashore. A 0.94-meter (3.1-foot) wave was recorded in Maurole in Ende Regency, while smaller waves were detected in South Sulawesi and Bima Regency.Indonesia’s meteorological agency said at least 235 aftershocks followed the main earthquake, including one with a magnitude of 6.2.Suharyanto, head of the National Disaster Management Agency, said rescuers had recovered at least 47 bodies, mostly in Sikka, Manggarai and East Manggarai. At least 50 people were taken to hospitals.The earthquake flattened at least 157 homes and damaged nearly 200 others, forcing around 2,000 residents into temporary shelters. More than 100 public facilities, including schools, health centers and churches, were also destroyed.Search and rescue officials warned that casualties could increase because earthquake-triggered landslides had buried or isolated remote communities across six regencies on Flores Island.Damaged roads, communication disruptions and a shortage of heavy equipment were hampering rescue operations. Landslides in Ende also blocked sections of the Trans-Flores highway, the main road stretching across the island.Authorities deployed three helicopters and a rescue vessel to support emergency operations and possible evacuations.Residents across Flores described scenes of panic as people fled damaged buildings and rushed toward higher ground.In Sikka, part of the waiting area at the Maumere port terminal collapsed. At St. Peter Major Seminary, students and nuns attending morning Mass fled after the roof of an assembly hall collapsed. At least one priest suffered a broken leg after jumping from the second floor of a building.The earthquake was also felt in Labuan Bajo, the gateway to the popular Komodo National Park, while damage was reported in neighboring West Nusa Tenggara and parts of southern Sulawesi.A separate magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck North Sumatra later Saturday at a depth of more than 172 kilometers (107 miles). Indonesian authorities said its depth meant it was unlikely to cause significant damage or casualties.Indonesia is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because it sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a highly active network of seismic fault lines and volcanoes.
