A silent protest will be held at Nageswara Rao Park on August 16 at 8 a.m. Led by patrons of the park and residents of Mylapore, the gathering is a call to the civic body to “finish the work, protect the trees and give them their park back”.Many residents have raised objection to the large scale felling of trees and excessive concretisation of the park.Last month, Supraja Srinivasan, a resident of Luz Avenue, started a petition on Change.org urging Greater Chennai Corporation to halt further concretisation, re-evaluate the plan on modernising the park and restore green spaces. Her petition garnered more than 5,600 signatures.In an update in the online petition, she writes that despite repeated requests, GCC has not responded. “Work at Nageswara Rao Park has stalled. Concrete patches remain unfinished, trees need urgent care, and with the monsoon approaching, delays will only make things worse,” she says.The silent gathering also requests participants to bring a placard that says what they feel about Nageswara Rao Park.Nizhal, Alliance of Resident Welfare Associations, Prakruthi and Spark are some of the groups that have lent their support to this silent meeting.
