Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Argentina international defender Cristian Romero, the club announced on its website on Saturday.

Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and made 156 appearances for the club in all competitions during his five-year spell.

He was a key member of the Tottenham side that won the UEFA Europa League in the 2024/25 season and was subsequently named captain for the 2025/26 campaign.

In a statement published on its website, Tottenham said, “Signed from Atalanta in 2021, ‘Cuti’ was a key player in our UEFA Europa League triumph of 2024/25 and was named captain for the 2025/26 campaign.

“His 32 appearances in all competitions last season took his tally to 156 in our colours.”
