Former University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday has died after being found unresponsive at a property in Battersea, with police treating the death as unexpected but not suspicious. Hours before his death, Prof Arday sent a voice note to a friend saying he felt he “couldn't go on” following intense media scrutiny over allegations regarding his academic background. Sir Simon Baron-Cohen, director of the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge, described Prof Arday as a “vulnerable autistic man” who was struggling with the loss of his reputation. Prof Arday, who became Cambridge's youngest Black professor in 2023, had previously been cleared of wrongdoing by Liverpool John Moores University following plagiarism allegations. Prominent figures, including National Education Union leader Daniel Kebede, stated Prof Arday was subjected to a brutal, politically motivated campaign targeting diversity, equity and inclusion policies.
