Sir, – Regarding “Is my daughter stuck with the old €335,000 tax-free gift limit?”, (Business, August 13th): I would love to be able to avail of a €335,000 tax-free gift, but the most I will be able to inherit tax-free is €40,000.There are many thousands of single, childless people, many of whom are unmarried siblings who may have lived together all their lives, but their beneficiaries can inherit only €40,000 before inheritance tax is deducted. As has already been pointed out many times, most of this money has already been taxed, eg Dirt.Just because someone is a “child” of a deceased parent, they receive a generous tax-free allowance – now €400,000.I have written to three TDs on this subject. I received no response from two of them and a pro forma reply from the third one, which made no reference whatsoever to the subject in question. I firmly believe that citizens in my category are being discriminated against with regard to inheritance tax. – Yours, etc,MARY FLYNN,Rathgar,Dublin 6.
Childless people are being overly taxed by inheritance tax
Their beneficiaries can inherit only €40,000 before taxation, unlike generous relief for sons and daughters
