(Image via Getty Images)The Kansas City Chiefs open their preseason Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams at 4:00 PM ET, and for Chiefs Kingdom, it has been a long wait. Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL on December 14, 2025, and spent months grinding through a recovery that most quarterbacks would need a full year to complete. Three weeks of training camp in St. Joseph showed a Mahomes who looked sharp, healthy, and ready. Now, with game week finally here, Andy Reid has made his position clear. Is Patrick Mahomes playing in the Chiefs' preseason opener against the Rams?Patrick Mahomes will not play Chiefs' first pre-season games against Rams. Andy Reid confirmed it directly: Mahomes will not play Saturday against Los Angeles. "There's a pretty good chance I don't play him," Reid said, adding that the "percentages are leaning that way." He was equally uncertain about the second and third preseason games, admitting, "I don't know if I'll play him in the second or third game."This is not a surprise, and it is not a red flag. Reid has done this before, more than once. After Jamaal Charles tore his ACL in 2015, Reid kept him out of every preseason game the following August, saying Charles needed "a little bit of time." He handled Tamba Hali's knee issues the same way, and in 2023 he kept Travis Kelce out of the preseason opener when Kelce's knee "wasn't feeling right." Reid simply does not take chances with players who matter to him, and no player matters more right now than Mahomes.ESPN's Nate Taylor, who covers the Chiefs beat closely, offered more context on why this decision came together the way it did. He said Mahomes is physically a "full go" at this point, and that if the regular season started this weekend, Mahomes would be on the field. But inside the building, the consensus was firm. Taylor put it plainly: "There's no reason to play him in the preseason. But man, if they played the Broncos on Sunday, he would be out there." He added that people within the organization believe "the juice is not worth the squeeze," and that while Reid personally wants to see how Mahomes operates in a live game situation, the medical staff's guidance is clear: the longer that knee stays away from contact, the better.Mahomes is not fighting the decision. "I'm for whatever coach says," he told reporters. "I'm going to prepare to play. He hasn't told me anything, so I'll prepare to play and prepare to get myself ready." He added that even without a green light, his focus would not waver. "We'll see where we go from there and if not, I'll be as locked in as I am during the game and try to get myself as ready to go [as possible] for the game."With Mahomes sitting, Justin Fields and rookie Garrett Nussmeier will handle the preseason reps. Fields came in after Gardner Minshew left for Arizona, and Reid made clear he was not brought in for a specialty role. He is the QB2, full stop, with 55 starts of NFL experience behind him. Nussmeier, a third-round pick out of LSU and Senior Bowl MVP, is the longer project. Draft analyst Dane Brugler ranked him third among 2026 quarterback prospects and said his "arm talent and command are foundational traits that generally translate well to the NFL." Reid summed up the reasoning simply: "We got new people behind him that need some work. The more reps they get, the better."How Is Patrick Mahomes Recovering From His ACL Injury Ahead of Week 1?Better than anyone realistically expected. According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, Mahomes has not missed a single first-team rep in training camp, knee brace and all, since the very first day in St. Joseph. For a quarterback who was initially given a nine-month recovery window, that is a remarkable place to be in mid-August.Reid, speaking with Breer, gave a candid account of what that recovery actually looked like. "He's going to do whatever it takes," Reid said. "It wasn't about going back home and going here, going there, traveling, all that. It was about him wanting to be back, ready to play. And so there was a sacrifice there of staying here and knocking it out, working with [Chiefs assistant trainer] Julie [Frymyer] every day and spending seven hours at it, and not always fun, right? But he didn't care. I mean, he was going to do it."Mahomes confirmed the same thing in his own words after a recent practice. "I forget about it sometimes; I try to be smart. It's about learning to play with what I got," he said. "We're just going to keep pushing it so I can hopefully get that ok to go out there and play Week 1."Whether Reid commits to that target is still unclear. Breer noted the coach "didn't want to commit to anything" when pressed on the September 15 opener against Denver. But everything about how Mahomes has moved through this camp suggests the plan is on track.
