The hit movie musical The Greatest Showman is set to make its West End debut in 2027 following a sell-out regional run.Released in 2017, the original period drama was inspired by the life of Barnum & Bailey Circus founder PT Barnum, and featured a star-studded cast including Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams and Zendaya.After a completely sold-out premiere at the Bristol Hippodrome in March, the theatrical adaptation is making its way to London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane, where it will open in spring next year.The production is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, with Oliver Tompsett cast as Barnum alongside Samantha Barks as his wife, Charity.Joining them in key roles are Ben Joyce as Phillip Carlyle, Vajen van den Bosch playing Jenny Lind, and Malinda Parris as Lettie Lutz.The show has enjoyed a strong regional run (PA)Audience members will hear the original Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated score composed by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, featuring favourites such as The Greatest Show, A Million Dreams, Come Alive, Rewrite The Stars, Never Enough and This Is Me. The Egot-winning songwriting duo has also written fresh tracks specifically for the stage adaptation.An official synopsis describes the storyline: "A restless maverick refuses the life everyone expects of him."Determined to build the greatest show on earth, he brings together those the world never expected to shine, creating something far bigger than he ever imagined."The production marks the first title to be adapted for the stage by Disney Theatrical Group (DTG).DTG’s Anne Quart and Andrew Flatt said: "It’s rare for a new film musical to capture the world’s imagination in the way The Greatest Showman has – both for its story and record-breaking soundtrack."The piece is fearless in its emotion: open-hearted, exuberant, and unapologetically joyous, celebrating those considered outsiders and dreamers."While its storytelling draws on classic traditions, its score is unmistakably of today — bold, infectious songs that feel they were always destined for the stage."They added: "The show is born of a collaboration with an incredible group of artists.The 2017 film featured Zac Efron (left), Zendaya (centre) and Hugh Jackman (right) (Getty)"Benj Pasek and Justin Paul return with the songs audiences will know and love, alongside exhilarating new numbers created especially for the stage."Tompsett’s extensive stage credits include roles in Wicked, A Knight’s Tale, Ghost, & Juliet, Pretty Woman, Kinky Boots, Guys And Dolls and Mamma Mia!.Barks, who has previously performed in Les Miserables, Pretty Woman and Frozen, first gained national prominence on the 2008 BBC talent contest I’d Do Anything, performing alongside future Oscar winner Jessie Buckley.On the big screen, The Greatest Showman earned three Golden Globe nominations, taking home the award for best original song for This Is Me, which was also nominated at the Academy Awards.Full performance schedules and details regarding ticket sales for the production are due to be announced at a later date.
