I was just writing about China exporting electric vehicles, and Chery buying a Nissan factory in South Africa to produce them there. Now I’ve also seen news that China just reached a new milestone, with electric vehicles playing a big part of that.

China exported more than one million electric vehicles for the second time ever last month, after first achieving the milestone the month before. A big reason for this was a boom in “new energy vehicle” (plugin vehicle) deliveries. There were 553,000 new energy vehicle exports in July, 5.7% more than in June and 145.5% more than in July 2025. And, yes, plugin vehicles did account for more than half of the country’s vehicle exports.

Overall, 1.043 million vehicles were exported from China, which was up very slightly (0.6%) from June and up hugely (81.3%) from last July. Though, as you saw above, plugin vehicle sales were up more month over month and year over year.
