The new football season begins with an early dose of rivalry on Sunday when Arsenal and Manchester City meet in the Community Shield, with both sides eager to begin the campaign with silverware and gain an early psychological advantage.
The game, which kicks off on Sunday at 3 pm, will be available live to DStv Yanga and GOtv Jolli subscribers via SuperSport Premier League (DStv channel 203) and SuperSport Premier League Africa (GOtv channel 65)
The traditional season curtain-raiser carries added intrigue this year, given the fierce battle between the two clubs last season. Arsenal eventually ended a 22-year wait to win the Premier League title, but City ran Mikel Arteta’s side close, remaining in contention deep into the campaign before finishing four points behind the champions.
Recent encounters have also favoured City. Pep Guardiola’s side won the most recent Premier League meeting 2-1 at the Etihad in April and followed that with a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley in March. The Community Shield, therefore, gives Arsenal an immediate opportunity to turn the tables, while City will be looking to reinforce their recent dominance in this fixture.
For City, however, this will be a new era. With Guardiola gone, Enzo Maresca takes charge for his first competitive match as manager. Maresca inherits a squad with considerable quality but has also strengthened it in the summer as he begins the task of putting his own stamp on the team. A victory over Arsenal would provide an ideal launchpad for his reign and an early indication that City remain serious contenders on all fronts.
