Janani Sankar, medical director, Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust HospitalChennai means everything to me. No other place feels quite like Chennai. The warmth and friendliness of its people are truly special and I have always felt that Chennai is a safe city for women.I studied MBBS at Madras Medical College from 1982 to 1988 and I cherish my memories of those years. The anatomy block, common hall, and seminar block hold a special place in my heart. One of my fondest memories is of the lunches my mother used to send me. In those days, long before food-delivery apps, “Sappatukarans”, much like Mumbai’s famous “dabbawallahs”, would bring our tiffin boxes, labelled with our names. My mother would often tuck little handwritten notes onto the boxes with short messages for me.I grew up in Mylapore and continue to live there. My favourite places include Marina Beach, the temples of Mylapore, and the Mada Veedhis where I enjoy shopping.Chennai is also a major healthcare hub, offering access to some of the country’s most comprehensive medical facilities, something I deeply value as a doctor.I hope Chennai’s infrastructure improves, with better roads, more organised traffic and well-maintained footpaths for pedestrians.(As told to Serena Josephine M) Published - August 15, 2026 12:50 am IST
