Two men were arrested for allegedly cheating a 25-year-old physiotherapist of ₹1,500 by falsely claiming that they had transferred the money through GPay after receiving cash from him at an ATM centre in Ashok Nagar.The arrested men were identified as Shahjith, 21 and Thiruselvam, 19, of Kodambakkam. The police said Appu, a resident of Kovur, works as a physiotherapist at a private clinic. On June 8, when he was withdrawing cash from an SBI ATM near 19th Avenue in Ashok Nagar, two men approached him and claimed that they urgently needed ₹1,500.The duo allegedly promised to transfer the amount to Appu through GPay if he handed them the cash. Believing them, Appu gave them ₹1,500. The accused allegedly scanned his QR code and, after making a sound on the mobile phone, claimed that the transaction had been completed. They then fled the spot on a two-wheeler. When Appu checked his bank account, he found that no money had been credited. He subsequently lodged a complaint with the Crime Wing of the K.K. Nagar police station. On investigating, the police arrested the duo.The police said the accused had allegedly used a similar method to cheat two other persons in Kodambakkam and Nungambakkam.
