The controversial Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) recruitment process is expected to be handled by the SA Youth Mobi digital platform, Parliament announced on Friday.
Rikus Badenhorst, the Chairperson of the Select Committee on Public Infrastructure and Minister in the Presidency, said that for far too long allegations of political gatekeeping, patronage and abuse in the allocation of opportunities have been made against the EPWP.
Badenhorst said Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) Dean Macpherson's decision to move EPWP recruitment onto the platform represents an important shift in how the government should create opportunities for unemployed South Africans.
Badenhorst explained that Macpherson’s nationwide EPWP listening tours heard these concerns directly. Badenhorst said this reduces the space for the politically connected middleman deciding who gets an opportunity and who does not.
