The Coimbatore Corporation has ordered the removal from service of a Junior Assistant following a Madras High Court order cancelling 54 appointments made by the civic body during its 2020-21 recruitment. The action was taken in compliance with the High Court’s judgment in Writ Appeal, delivered on June 18, 2026. The court set aside the earlier writ order and the appointments of the 54 candidates to the post of Junior Assistant.Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja issued the removal order on August 14. It noted that six of the affected candidates had approached the Supreme Court against the judgment through Special Leave PetitionThe Supreme Court dismissed the petition on July 14, 2026, stating that it found no grounds to interfere with the High Court’s judgment. The Corporation also cited a letter from the State Government’s Additional Chief Secretary dated August 13 directing it to implement the court’s directions and submit a report on a “top priority” basis. The removal order takes immediate effect. The case relates to the Corporation’s 2021 recruitment, for which it had notified 69 vacancies and received 654 applications. Of the 440 candidates who attended certificate verification, 54 were selected and issued posting orders the next day.S. Eeswari of New Siddhapudur, who had joined the Corporation on compassionate grounds in 2016 as a sanitary worker, challenged the appointments. After her original plea was dismissed, she and 10 others filed the writ appeal. The High Court found that the committees constituted by the Corporation had only conducted certificate verification and could not substitute a valid selection committee. It also noted that original records on marks, interview assessments and candidates’ eligibility and suitability were unavailable, rendering the recruitment process invalid.
