:The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) is yet to submit action-taken report to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) after inspection of a suspected contaminated site at Mudhalipalayam village in Tiruppur district where dumping of solid and liquid wastes in abandoned quarries had caused acute toxicity to soil and ground water.Responding to public complaints, the CPCB had forwarded the same to the TNPCB for examination, on February 12, 20-26.In view of the delay, the Regional Office of CPCB has been entrusted with the responsibility of securing an action-taken report from the TNPCB at the earliest, according to a recent communication.On their part, the residents of Mudhalipalayam who had earlier contemplated boycotting participation in the Gram Sabha meeting on August 15 as part of Independence Day celebrations have decided to take part following talks with officials.Block Development Officers in Mudhalipalayam held discussions talks with representatives of environmental organisations and gave an assurance that remedial action will be taken for setting right the toxicity of soil and ground water that had been caused by dumping of solid wastes by the Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation.The residents had boycotted the first four of the last six Gram Sabha meetings in the village decrying inaction by the Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation. The fifth and sixth Gram Sabha meetings were conducted after officials had promised prompt action.The residents believe that they would be participating in the seventh Gram Sabha meeting on Saturday in good faith.
