District Collector A. Siri on Friday (August 14, 2026) announced that the administration set an ambitious target of planting 45 lakh saplings this year to increase the district’s green cover and forest area by at least one percentage point.Launching a mega plantation drive at the Tehsildar office at Emmiganur on the eve of Independence Day, the Collector planted a sapling and administered an environmental protection pledge to officials, students, and NGOs. “The present special drive is to promote patriotism, social responsibility, and environmental awareness among people,” she said.Ms. Siri appealed to the public to plant and protect saplings, highlighting that environmental conservation was a collective responsibility. She said various departments would work together to achieve the plantation target and ensure the survival and growth of saplings.The Collector further stressed that the youth groups should contribute to society and the nation.
