The tariffs matter for Red Cat because they could shift the competitive balance toward domestic drone makers as Washington prioritizes U.S. production and supply chains.
Tariffs Target Foreign Drone Competition
The proclamation imposes a 100% tariff on certain drones considered particularly sensitive for national security, including drones with a maximum takeoff weight of more than 25 kilograms and drones with thermal imaging capabilities. The tariff also covers docking stations and certain critical components for those drones.
Certain smaller drones that lack capabilities considered particularly sensitive for national security, as well as other drone components, will face a 25% tariff.
Imports from several U.S. allies will face lower rates. Drones and components from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff, while drones from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff, provided substantially all hardware, software and technology originates within those countries and the United States.
