Udupi Deputy Commissioner T.K. Swaroopa has barred Hindu Jagarana Vedike activist Satish Poojary of Davangere, who is accused in 19 criminal cases, from entering Udupi district for three months, until November 10.The order was passed by Ms. Swaroopa on August 10 based on a report by Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar.In his report, Mr. Shankar said Poojary, 44, an autorickshaw driver by profession, was an active member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike. He was the convener of the Vedike’s Davangere district unit for seven years. Cases of hurting communal sentiments have been registered against Poojary in the Davangere City, Gauribidanur, and Harihar police stations. He has delivered inflammatory speeches in several places across the State. Poojary continues to be involved in communal activities. He was named the keynote speaker for the Akhila Bharat torchlight procession in Karkala on August 10.Of the 19 criminal cases he has been named accused in, he has been convicted in two cases and acquitted in seven, while investigations are on in four others. Poojary has also been listed as a rowdy-sheeter in the KGT Town police station of Davangere city, Mr. Shankar stated in his report.In order to maintain law and order in Udupi district and in public interest, Ms. Swaroopa exercised her powers under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to bar Poojary’s entry to Udupi district between August 11 and November 10.Similar orders were passed recently by Ms. Swaroopa barring Bajrang Dal Mangaluru unit convener Puneet Attavar and activist Narasimha Mani, both of whom are named accused in criminal cases, from entering Udupi district for three months.
