Three men suspected of extortion were shot dead by police near Elliotdale in the Eastern Cape on Thursday afternoon.
Police spokeswoman Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said the three "were fatally wounded during a shootout with police members while they acted on operational intelligence aimed at disrupting criminal activities".
She said members of the National Intervention Unit had acted on information about suspected extortionists travelling in a white Toyota Fortuner around Elliotdale at about 5pm.
"The vehicle, fitting the description, was spotted near a scrapyard," Mawisa said.
