Just weeks after returning to EastEnders, one star has confirmed that he filmed his final scenes and was once again leaving the soap, with no hint of another come back13:15, 14 Aug 2026One EastEnders star has confirmed that he has left the soap, just six weeks after he came back. Toby-Alexander Smith returned as Gray Atkins on 29 June, but his final episode as the character has already aired.‌Toby-Alexander confirmed that he had left the show on Instagram. He shared a picture of himself in a hair and make-up chair and wrote in the caption: "Well Walford, it's been wild... again."‌This comes after Thursday's episode aired a shock stabbing in the prison where both Gray and Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) are currently serving their sentences. Over the past week, Ian had been drawn into a revenge scheme Gray had orchestrated. He was pushed to invite Gray's ex Chelsea (Zaraah Abarahams) to the prison so that she wouldn't be around when his grandmother Sheila (Sheila Ruskin) kidnapped their son.‌But the plan went wrong, as Chelsea's family were able to get to the airport and stop Sheila from taking the child out of the country. When Gray realised his masterplan had failed, he blamed Ian, insisting that the former councillor must have tipped everyone off. He threatened Ian with a blade he made out of a toothbrush and knocked Ian to the floor when he tried to reach for the emergency button. They ended up scrapping on the floor and Ian ultimately turned the blade on Gray, landing the serial killer in hospital. It was later revealed that Gray pulled through, but that didn't mean the character was staying onscreen.‌When Toby-Alexander returned as Gray in late June, the BBC did say that it was the return was temporary. This didn't stop fans from being devastated that he was gone. One wrote: "Personally wish he would come back for good!"Another added: "Amazing scenes tonight! Best comeback ever! Great acting between you and Adam" A third said: "You play your part brilliantly and so convincing...gutted its only been a short stint ...wishing you all the best for your future roles."‌When Toby-Alexander first joined EastEnders in 2019, he was a businessman and the husband of Chantelle Baker (Jessica Plummer). His first storyline revolved around domestic violence, as it was quickly revealed that Gray was hitting Chantelle behind closed doors. His behaviour got worse during lockdown, ultimately resulting in Chantelle's death when he pushed her onto a loaded dishwasher and she was impaled on knives.Gray, fearing for his reputation, left Chantelle to die. To cover up his crime, he later strangled Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White), who suspected him of hurting his wife. He also killed Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami) when he realised his new obsession Whitney Dean (Shona MccGarty) loved Kush and not Gray.Article continues belowGray later started a relationship with Chelsea and she got pregnant. She tried to run to Ibiza, but he stopped her. In 2022, after Chelsea and Whitney both discovered Gray's crimes, he went to prison. He had not been seen since until his return in 2026.Toby-Alexander is just the latest to leave EastEnders. Kellie Bright recently announced that she was leaving and Michelle Ryan quit the soap earlier this year.Like this story?
