Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Kaylin Swart was notably emotional after leading the team to the intercontinental World Cup play-offs, hoping that will silence her critics and restore positive morale around the team going forward.
Banyana beat arch-rivals Nigeria 2-1 at Moulay Prince Rachid Stadium to progress to the next round of the World Cup play-off qualifiers. Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane ensured that the South Africans led before Christy Ucheibe scored a late penalty in stoppage time.
While the goals were crucial in securing the win, credit also needed to go to Swart. She duly earned the Player of the Match award, making two crucial saves in the second half that ensured Banyana bagged the win.
Swart’s heroics served as consolation and made up for lost time after she was heavily criticised in the Wafcon group stage and quarter-final defeat to Morocco for being responsible for the goals after moving off her line.
