LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson said Thursday that many starters won’t play in the preseason opener against Cleveland.With joint practices upcoming in Cincinnati and Tennessee, it’s possible that most of the Bears’ most notable players won’t get any preseason snaps.That means Caleb Williams won’t be playing at Soldier Field this weekend.“I don’t know that I need to see game snaps,” Johnson said. “Do I need to see Caleb Williams in the preseason? No, I don’t. I see him every single day in practice, and I know what we’re going to get come the season. And yet at the same time there is a workload, and there is a number of reps that we want to hit as a team. And so make sure we even that out, whether that’s game reps or not.”Johnson oversaw a scrimmage on Tuesday that allowed players to experience live football, albeit in a practice setting. Williams had 25 pass attempts last preseason, his first in Johnson’s offense.While the team’s biggest names are set to be in street clothes on the sideline Saturday, here are five things to monitor against Cleveland, from roster battles to rookies getting their NFL debut.LT competition between Kiran Amegadjie and Jedrick WillsKiran Amegadjie, the team’s 2024 third-round pick, will get the start at left tackle. Jedrick Wills will then enter, and the two will play a similar number of snaps for the coaching staff to assess their options.Braxton Jones was back at Thursday’s practice, but in a limited fashion. The preseason opener will be a massive opportunity for Amegadjie, who has struggled to stay healthy in his Bears career.“He’s working hard,” Johnson said. “He’s got a better understanding of the offense — that’s clear — and you can tell his confidence level continues to rise each practice he’s out there.”Wills, a 2020 first-round pick, has flashed in the pass-protection drills.“You see the talent. You go on to one-on-ones, and he does as good as anybody taking a set and punching and keeping guys away from the quarterback,” Johnson said. “That’s the balancing act, is how much does the talent outweigh that? ‘Oh shoot, there’s a couple things there, had a couple false starts the other day, things we’ve got to clean up because he’s thinking about it.’ So he’s in a race right now to get comfortable.”Veteran safeties Cam Lewis and Xavier WoodsCam Lewis was back in action Thursday after missing time over the past week due to an undisclosed injury.
