Latvia issued an air-raid warning overnight on August 13-14 and said NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that had entered the country's airspace. Latvian authorities believe the unmanned aircraft may have strayed from its intended route after being affected by Russian electronic warfare.
The Latvian National Armed Forces said Friday morning that allied fighter jets on patrol had intercepted and destroyed the drone after it entered Latvian airspace, apparently as a result of electronic interference attributed to Russia.
An air-raid warning that had been issued in five areas of Latvia was lifted at 4:50 a.m. local time after the threat was considered over.
“The threat to our airspace has ended. Allied fighter jets successfully shot down the unmanned aircraft,” the Latvian National Armed Forces said.
The drone was brought down over Balvi Municipality in northeastern Latvia. A spokesperson for the Latvian National Armed Forces Joint Headquarters told Latvian Radio that authorities know where the debris fell but have not yet disclosed the location.
