A Lithuanian border guard was slightly injured during an incident near the Belarus border in late July when migrants allegedly tried to drag him toward Belarusian territory, the news portal Lrytas.lt reported Friday.
The incident occurred in the area covered by the Kapčiamiestis Border Guard Station of the Varėna Border Guard Unit, according to Lrytas.lt. Sources told the portal that the officer is currently on sick leave.
Vitalijus Jagminas, chairman of the Vilnius County Trade Union of Pretrial Investigation Institutions, also confirmed to Lrytas.lt that one of the border guards is on sick leave.
The State Border Guard Service (VSAT) declined to comment on the circumstances of the incident when contacted by BNS, saying pretrial investigations are underway.
Lrytas.lt also reported, citing sources, that VSAT commander Rustamas Liubajevas had allegedly instructed border guards on what to say about the incident. The report did not provide details of the alleged instructions.
